A home extension is the enlargement of the existing building. This can be done to increase the room spaces in a dwelling. The home may be developed without the owners input thus requiring some changes in the design. House extensions may also involve changing window or door locations. This can be due to the intended use of the house in relation to the owners desire. It is important before embarking on this works to consult the planning authorities. This is for allowing changes to be carried out. Extensions maybe a laundry area, garage or an out door kitchen.

When the home extension is due, the existing building drawings should be available. It is advisable that no work should commence without them. This will show how the foundations, services for both mechanical or electrical have been laid inside and outside the structure. They also show whether the area to be built has an underground tank or septic tank buried below. The budget for the work is arrived at by preparing a bill of quantities. Any new materials to be purchased will also be known and also there availability.

The extension is started by marking and and setting out the the structure. The work commences from the substructures, superstructure, roofing, doors, windows and finishes. This building elements are carried out with the existing buildings design being considered. If there is need for accessing this new building from inside the old one, a door opening will be required. Sometimes a new window may be added to the existing building in case the extension covers or blocks the one.

The builder of the extension must note the method of joining the roof, walls and floor. The new building is completed first before cutting any new door or window openings. The new walls are built and a toothing left on each alternate course about an inch from the old house. The walls are then joined by cutting alternate holes and building up the spaces on the toothing. The floor is joined by raking out the concrete and reinforcement. After the unit is joined then the finishes are carried on the building.
