The glass block walls have many shades and features. The area to be walled should be clean and free of any debris and dust. This is because the jointing material or adhesive may also be clear in color. When erecting full height glass walls, the abutting masonry should have the plaster complete. This means the blocks will be an in fill as they are not load bearing. The wall is reinforced on the sides with aluminum frames to house doors or openings.
When erecting glass blocks in a sunken lounge, the wall and floor surfaces are cleaned thoroughly. The area to be walled is measured first. This to enable full glass blocks to be used. In the lounge wall, the height to be used is three feet. This gives about five courses of blocks. The adhesive is poured on the floor and spread to required thickness. It is also applied on any abutting masonry wall to the of one glass block course. Blocks are then laid.
In laying the glass blocks, the adhesive should be used as in the manufacturers instructions. Silicon is the common adhesive used in building glass block walls. The blocking of the wall is laying piece by piece. Every joint is filled with the adhesive. When all the courses are complete, the silicon is cleaned off. The top of the wall can be finished with timber, aluminum or rubber rails. This is used for placing things on top while protecting the glass.
