Flagstones are medium dressed or fare faced. They should be of minimum six to eight inches thick. The length and shapes can vary. This adds beauty to the path. It gives a rubble masonry finish. The spaces in between may be filled with sand or grass is allowed to grow. The stones can be selected from the waste after construction or imported from quarries. They should be obtained from medium to hard rocks. This makes them more weather resistant.
The procedure of laying the flagstones starts with ground preparation. Excavation is done to remove vegetable soil. Ramming and compaction is then done. The height is raised to four inches by adding well compacted soil . After the ground is ready, a blinding layer is done. The blinding materials to use are murram or quarry dust. The blinding is water and well compacted to give a firm base. A medium sized roller may be used to compact the blinding materials.
After the base is done, the laying of flagstones commences. They are put on surface and arranged one by one. There is no specific pattern of laying the stones. The edge restraints are done using stones jointed with mortar. Edge pieces are cut to fill the empty spaces. Sand is poured on top and a hard broom used to sweep it into the joints. If vegetation is to be done, soil is added to the joints and grass or desired plant roots pushed into the joints.
