How to fix an electric strip light

Strip lights are located in bathrooms. They are in two types, some with a shaver unit and others without. These are longitudinal and are about one foot or more in length. The switching method is either by a pull cord or switch. They are mounted above the mirror. These lights may burn out or need replacement. Since bathrooms are wet areas, care is taken in fixing. This is to avoid the risk of an electric shock. Tiling on the wall must not get damaged.

When fixing a strip light, the mains supply to the lights must be switched off. This is done at the consumer unit containing the main switch. The size of the mirror will also determine the length of the unit. This should be placed central to the wash hand basin and mirror. When choosing the type to fix, get one with an energy saving bulb. This reduces electricity costs. The type of bulbs or filament tubes should also be easy to replace if broken.

The method of fixing a strip light, start by shutting off the mains. Remove the old strip light, if its already fitted. If its a new one mark the points above the mirror. Ensure that a conduit to bring power to the bathroom is in place including the wires. Assemble the unit and mark the screw holes on the wall. Once marked, use a drill and ensure that the holes are done carefully. Insert plastic studs or plugs that come with screws into the holes.

The strip light to be fixed has a back plate which is screwed to the wall first. Assemble the casing as per instructions and wire accordingly. Screw back the casing and fit the bulbs or filaments. Turn on the lights main switch. Switch on the fixture to check whether its working. Once its confirmed to be working, test with a shaving machine and also confirm it is working. Apply silicon at the joint of the light and tiles then Clean the area.
