Garden lights are powered from cables buried in the ground. The lamp posts or stand are of various types. This range from aluminum, steel or timber posts. The point of switching on is near the security lights or patio lights point. Its important that the light housing is water proof. This will prevent water or moisture from reaching the bulb holder. It is also a safety requirement to avoid the risk of electric shocks during the rains.
To start fixing garden lights, the power source is identified. Then excavate a trench of at least one foot deep in the ground. After this lay the power cable recommended and of the right quality in the ground. Under the driveways or walkways its appropriate to use sleeves or conduits. Ensure that posts are concreted in the ground. They should have a base plate at the bottom but hollow inside. This is to enable the cable to be pulled to the light point.
Once garden light posts are fixed, insert the cable. Add the light fitting desired onto the posts. Connect the power cable to the control unit. Switch on the power to test the fitting. Cover up the excavated trench only after all lamps in the garden are tested. Different switching mechanisms may be used. Normally this switching on is done manually. A photo cell system can be used to turn on the lights once its dark. It turns off and on automatically.
