Before laying the clay tiles ensure the roof structure is complete. check in the drawings that all structural members are in place. start by laying the roof underlay which may be polythene or plain galvanized iron sheets. Fix the underlay by rolling out the sheets on trusses. Start from the lower side of the roof slope working upwards to the roof top or ridges. Tack the underlay onto truss with nails to ensure it is spread flat without sagging.
Roofing tiles should be fixed in a straight line. Measure a full tile spacing and then reduce to allow for nibs to hook on battens. When fixing battens add an overhang over the fascia board of atleast six inches. Measure the nibs to end of tile and make as the distance from batten to batten. Nail this onto the underlay working upwards to the ridge. Follow the manufactures instructions to ensure proper interlocking and overlapping of the clay tiles.
Wet the clay roofing tiles thoroughly before commencing the laying on to battens. Start from the lower side and on roof edge giving overlaps of six inches. continue laying upwards to the ridge while also maintaining starlight lines and patterns. Cutting of tiles at the ridge, valleys or hips must be done carefully and neatly and carried out with properly sharpened tools. Cover the verge board ends with cement mixed to match the color of clay tiles.
Once the clay tiles are laid start fixing the ridge caps. Commence from one end ensuring the caps interlock correctly. Use matching cement for caps to lay on and for jointing between them and roofing tiles. Fix the stooped ends using matching cement to block wind and birds from nesting inside. Again note the manufacturers instructions during laying. Clean the roof surfaces and check to make sure its water tight by pouring water with a pipe.
