How to prepare plastered surfaces for decoration

Plaster to walls or any surfaces is done after most of the building works are complete including roofing. This walls or surfaces require decoration to give the final finish. To prepare for this works the basic procedure is to let cement works dry for a period of atleast a month or more before embarking on any paint or decorative works. This will include but not limited to oil or emulsion paints. Before any of the painting jobs begin prepare the surfaces.

The preparation of approved plastered walls for decoration should start by stopping and rubbing down flush with a filler.Brush down the surface and leave free all efflorescence, dirt and dust.Use a fine sand paper and light against the wall to check for any bumps.Clear all uneven spots till its smooth.Prime the wall several times until it looks and feels like paper.Identify paint to use whether oil or water based paint.Apply with a roller or soft brush.

Plastered surfaces which are to be finished with emulsion, enamel or oil paint should be primed with an alkali resisting primer. This should comply with the paint manufacturers specifications and the instructions should be also followed. The reason for this note is because some manufacturing companies use different substances which may interfere with the final outcome of the decoration.

Plastered surfaces in particular for concrete walls, beams, ceilings, columns should be filled and rubbed to remove any indentation caused by formwork.Alignment should be done to remove nail marks, holes or other defects.Once ready use undercoat and follow with acrylic, emulsion or gloss paint in three coats to achieve maximum colors. For wall paper decoration use required adhesive and a roller to press firmly onto the wall to stick without air pockets.
