A cornice is the piece of building material placed between the ceiling and the wall. Its used to cover the joint of the different materials used for the ceiling and as an aesthetic material on the slab soffits and wall.Timber cornices are in different types and sizes. The method of jointing is to cut at angle of forty five degrees for the pieces to have a smooth even joint.
Timber cornice is slowly being out dated due to the various polyurethane or gypsum materials available in construction material hardwares or department stores. The cornice with time may have had a crack or was damaged during addition of fixtures on the wall or ceiling which would need to be replaced. Its important to note the method of fixing either by screws or nails hammered to the wall and ceiling.
When sourcing for the replacement ensure that the timber cornice is dry and well seasoned. It should also be straight and of the same size width wise with the one to replace.Use a screw driver to pull of the cornice from the wall or ceiling.Measure the piece to replace and cut across at forty five degrees both ends including the good to ensure a smooth joint also gypsum strip can be used on both ends
Once the timber cornice is cut and measures replace by hammer nailing into the wall to ensure no gaps appear on the joint between it and the wall.Use a sand paper to rub down and apply undercoat paint and let it dry.Add filler on the joints round and rub down again.Apply the matching paint color previously done on the cornice. Its important for the last coat of paint to be done all round the new and old to give the cornice an equal shade of color.
